problems with fglrx xorg700 on fedora5

i have a radeon 9800, running a linux box on fedora5 with a 2.6 kernel.
ever since i migrated to linux (fedora 1, dont remember exactly one), i
had trouble with the fglrx drivers, and apparently i'm not the only one
:). anyway... every time i installed a new kernel/upgrading to a new
fedora version, i had to do everything again. but after a few times it
got easy, i had a couple of patches, and managed to install it quite
easly. however, when i got to Fedora Core 5 == xorg7, i got a whole new
series of problems.
as i found out after i installed the drivers&hit the black screen a few
times&got stuck to init3, xorg7.00 moved the /lib/modules from
/usr/X11R6 to /usr/lib/xorg (which makes a lot more sense, actually),
but fglrx still copied its files to the old directory.
symlinked everything and worked... everything fine until i had to
format my partition to merge with an ex-ntfs partiton (after realizing
that i haven't used windows since i got fc1 installed :D ).
everything smooth until i had to install fglrx, did everything ( i
think ) the way i did it before, but it doesn't work. gdm stops dead,
so i have to enter init3, login,init5,to get it working. the Xorg.0.log
says everything's fine, yet i don't have hardware accelaration :(.
So this is what i've done:
1. Ran the installer:
]# X_VERSION=x690 ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run
// x700 isn't supported so i figured i was in for some trouble
2. Used every recommended thing arround, to keep things simple.
3. Patched the kernel module with 2 patches i got from the net (the
ones that got me working last time) (i posted them at the end)
3. Forgot to remove the drm kernel module before, so i had to reboot in
init3 then insert the module manually (modprobe).
4. Copied files form /usr/X11R6/bin,modules,include to their appropiate
places (/usr/bin,/usr/lib/xorg/modules and /usr/include respectfully).
5. Rebooted, got black screen after the graphical loading (the progress
bar with the ''show details'' button, i'm not sure if it's part of
gdm).
6. Tried Ctrl-Alt-F1,F2etc., no result. tried Ctrl-Alt-BkSpace,
nothing, tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete, nope...
7. Hard reboot :(
8. 1.5h spent on fsck-ing and repairing to get it to finally mount
again.
9. Changed inittab to init3 so i have to login/init5/login to get in
10. The Xorg.0.log shows that fglrx is succesfully loaded, no message
about no HW accel...
11. fgl_glxgears gives:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 32
Current serial number in output stream: 32
// actually it varies a little from run to run
12. glxgears runs, but gives extremely small FPS, obviously having no
HW support
patches i used: http://amenzix.bro.ro/files/fglrx.p1.patch and
http://amenzix.bro.ro/files/fglrx.p2.patch
(sorry i don't have the original author, download them some time ago :(
)
Xorg.0.log: http://amenzix.bro.ro/files/Xorg.0.log
i use SDL extensively for a few projects, so not having HW is doom to
me :) (although come to think about it, DOOM! managed quite well
without any HW, so i gues s "... so not having HW is Oblivion to me" is
more apropriate :) )...
maybe someone can guide me through all the steps with extensive detail,
maybe i forgot something, what is really annoying is that i cannot hor
i got it to work the other time, it seems to me like i've done
everything absolutely the same... so unless a weird quantum event has
happened, ori if it doesn't work because the partition is larger (the
latter is even less probable), it should work in my book...
