In this case try Knoppix. http://www.knoppix.org/ It is a live CD/DVD.
Most live CDs/DVDs come with all the apps. You can just pop the CD on a
bootable computer & surf the internet, use office suite & much more.

Also you can create an Emergency router using Knoppix. Although, I've
never tried it.

If you have never used Linux b4, I suggest you duel boot with one of
the distro. This would give a general idea of what you are getting
yourself into. Live CDs/DVD are also best way to learn about Linux &
its ability.
