Secondly..as far as dependancy does linux crash or freeze easily?
Because I have an older windows 2000 server running and I leave that
one on for months at a time and not once have I ever came into problems
of it crashing down, and if it does freeze up, how hard is it to
retrieve files off of it, if it is messed up?
Linux is VERY stable.
HOWEVER, if your hardware is not stable then it isn't going to make a whole
lot of difference. Bad ram, bad mobo, slow chip death, voltage spikes etc -
all can add to system instability.

Of course, if a faulty power supply *has* led to other components overheating, it may not be *just* the PSU *anymore*... ... I can also offer the following sad story from my youth as a cautionary tale: In my early PC days, when the idea of opening one up, let alone building one was alien to me, I had a Compaq Presario Windows 95 system that developed a problem whereby the PSU fan kept stalling. ...
