Ok I have been intimidated for the last couple of years now to create a
linux machine in my network, but I want to at least try it and see how
I could use linux. I got a small machine which I just want to fiddle
with, so I got 2 HD's the master being 20g and the other is a 10g so
here is my first question. I want to create a server with this machine
so how do I go about dividing the hd? I want one partition to be big
enough to store all my files so this is where I get confused about
partiotioning the hd's how much do i need for each drive?
partitioning is very flexible with Linux. A lot of folks throw everything
in one partition (except, of course, that it's good to have a swap
partition about twice RAM). This is not a bad idea for a beginner. You
need to learn to walk before you run.
I might suggest you run a couple of Live CDs like Knoppix or Elive first.
You can load and run these from the CD without even doing an install. It
will check for any problematic hardware and let you 'try before you buy'.
Secondly..as far as dependancy does linux crash or freeze easily?
I have been using Linux for over five years on a couple of dozen machines.
I have NEVER seen Linux crash, short of a hardware problem. I have seen
Xwindows freeze a few times, but you can usually log out and cure the
problem. For a server, you probably don't even need Xwindows, so it is as
robust as it can be. I have seen many Linux machines, desktops as well as
servers, run well over six months - only to be rebooted when power failed
or to replace hardware.
Because I have an older windows 2000 server running and I leave that
one on for months at a time and not once have I ever came into problems
of it crashing down, and if it does freeze up, how hard is it to
retrieve files off of it, if it is messed up?
I know these questions are VERY LAME and I do apologize for my novice
questions, just I wanted to get an understanding of linux before I
could put it in our network.
