How many development packages I need & missing?

Due to some serious problem I decided to reinstall debian. After
installing it I decided to compiled a new kernel - and I was getting
following errors
In file included from scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/checklist.c:24:
scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/dialog.h:31:20: curses.h: No such file or
directory
In file included from scripts/kconfig/lxdialog/checklist.c:24:
After doing some researching I learn that I was missing ncurses-devel
package which I was easily able to install via synaptic.
Is there any way to install all important development packages &
libraries? How many devl packages & libraries am i missing? Is there
any way to know?
