Logging in as super user

I have three problems with my fresh install of Ubuntu.

1. The Ubuntu installer never asked me to specify a root password.

2. When I try to login (within an X shell) as root it says "No utmp
entry. You must exec 'login' from the lowest level of 'sh'"

3. When I try to su I get an authentication failure.

Any ideas?

Robin.
