I have three problems with my fresh install of Ubuntu.

1. The Ubuntu installer never asked me to specify a root password.

2. When I try to login (within an X shell) as root it says "No utmp
entry. You must exec 'login' from the lowest level of 'sh'"

3. When I try to su I get an authentication failure.

Any ideas?

Robin.

If I remember correctly, Ubuntu locks the root account by default, and
instead encourages users to use sudo when administrative commands are
needed. To fix this, you can type:

sudo passwd root

This will set the password for root, allowing you then to log in as, and
su to root.

Have fun!
