anybody know where I can find some good information on how to set up a
network under linux. I work at a community center and we are switching
from Windows to Linux (Fedora Core 5). we need to share a printer over
the network and allow one windows computer to access it. all of the
information I have found so far was of no help. I have been using linux
at home for over a year but have never set up a network on it. my network
experience is very little. Thanks.
Samba is your solution. Although the setup is a bit different than on a native SMB (Windows) box, the result is the same and it will be transparent to your Windows clients - they'll never know they're not connecting to a Windows print server. The biggest problem I had with Samba was understanding the way users authenticated. If you get that the smbusers file is a map between one or more local Linux accounts and Windows accounts, your battle is half over. If you're using gnome desktop on your FC5 box, you can set up your users and shares from the "system-config-samba" tool. You'll still need to make sure your file permissions are set correctly for file shares.
