This limits my options where installing Linux is concerned - to a full
package accompanying a retailed magazine, or similar.
Yet why should a Linux download be one whole system, in one go? Why not a
series of modules, copied onto hard disk partitions, then such partitions
"defragmented"?
After all, Linux is a file "tree", with kernel, root, trunk, branches,
leaves, fruit - to carry the analogy to its limits.
Splitting it into modules would pose a few challengers to programmers -
but why should they bother, merely to accommodate the likes of me?
On the other hand, we have mini-Linux (anorexic?), or obese versions, full
of junk food. A customised aggregation has some appeal.
There are several Linux distributions which are available as small initial
packages which lead to an online installation. One approach would be Linux
From Scratch or Gentoo - there is nothing there that you don't install.
