I've been planning to set up Linux - possibly Ubuntu - but
someone just told me that if I dual boot I lose Windows System
Restore.

Is that true? Is there a workaround?

BS. If it's like most modern MS setups the system is on one partition, the
restore is on another. So simply leave both partitions. Resize,
repartition to make space for Linux and go for it. I did that recently.
