Kernel too old error with 2.6.21

Hi!

In my first attempt at compiling a kernel in over half a decade, I
used a hard disk install of Knoppix 4.0 and got the Linux kernel
v2.6.21. After the menuconfig, make and make install, I modified
menu.lst (GRUB) re-booted with the new kernel and got the error
"FATAL: Kernel too old".

Am I missing something? Perhaps replacing the older kernel headers
from the Knoppix install?

I would appreciate any help I can get.

Regards,
NiTiN
