I have a lot of removable hard drives in racks and trays but only have

on a 200Gb hdd without a partition nightmare
First, it depends of which distribution and how many of the packages
you want to install. I install Mandriva Linux all package groups KDE,
GNOME desktop and a raft of games besides the default. I do not install
the LSB group.
Example selection:
http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/instimgmdv06/12.png
$ df -m /
Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda12 10486 6721 3232 68% /
After that, the next limit would be what kind of 200GB drive, (ide,
sata,..) Next would be what the boot manager could boot, followed by
now many partitions are compilled into the kernel.
...most installs seem pretty
safe if you let the install partition manager take control.........
I do not give the partition manager any slack, I just install
everything into one partition.
It depends to some extent how much and what you plan to do. I used to
allot 10gb for each distro - I routinely do 15-20 now. Of course, you
only need one swap.
You also need only one data partition, if that is the way you wish to go.
I have, at the moment two Linux distributions with small root and home
partitions. There is a very large data partition on which all data
generated from the two distros are kept.
Linux is flexible, now that HD are way huge ones thinking of their use
needs to change.
