It is greatly advisable to go 6.06 -> 6.10 -> 7.04; but you don't need a
CD if you have broadband access. There are technical reasons to do it that
way - trust me.
The alternative is to do a fresh install.
BTW - you may get more assistance from alt.os.linux.ubuntu.
