The answer is "it depends". Basically if you allot 10GB to your Linux
distribution that should hold everything you want with room to spare.
Basically anything allotted to your Linux distribution over that 10GB you
could use for user-space storage in your separate /home partition (I am
sure you *will* have a separate /home ;) ).

FWIW, here is my ALL Linux disk layout on my 36GB U320 SCSI drive:

[root@era4 ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 36.7 GB, 36778545152 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4471 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 130 1044193+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 131 4471 34869082+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 131 260 1044193+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 261 266 48163+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 267 1179 7333641 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 1413 1542 1044193+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda9 1543 4471 23527161 83 Linux
/dev/sda10 1180 1412 1871541 83 Linux

Partition table entries are not in disk order

[root@era4 ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 1004M 140M 814M 15% /
/dev/sda6 47M 8.0M 36M 19% /boot
/dev/sda9 23G 17G 5.6G 76% /home
/dev/sda8 1004M 17M 937M 2% /tmp
/dev/sda7 6.9G 4.2G 2.4G 64% /usr
/dev/sda10 1.8G 524M 1.2G 31% /var

When I decided to get serious about OSS and Linux I decided to abandon
*and* *do* *without* any software that did not have an OSS equivalent. I
almost succeeded. Happily I found equivalents to all except for two
programs that I could not abandon and can run under WINE. The ones that I
do without are *games* and I don't miss them.

In our business IE6 is used alongside Firefox, Opera and Konqueror to
check web pages we develop for client web sites. Unfortunately as long as
idiots^H^H^H^H^H^H certain end-lusers continue to use Windoze and IE we
will need to keep some version of IE here against which to check our web
development efforts. So far WINE has worked for that. ;)

KeyView for Lotus is used to access our old Lotus WordPro documents that
we need to keep for now. After another year we can get rid of the last of
the Lotus documents and will no longer need KeyView.
