OK, I downloaded my software to the desktop, unpacked it and installed

I'm using Mandriva.

Unfortunately with Linux, user applications tend to be scatter loaded
into different directories depending on the individual file --
executable, library, support files, docs, etc. -- but in general,
terminal commands and utilities are in /bin and /sbin, user applications
go into either /usr/share or /usr/share/local with libraries in the lib
sub-directory, executables in bin, documentation in doc, etc.

To better understand the Linux directory structure and why it is set up
the way it is, you need to read about it. Doing a Google or Yahoo search
is a good place to begin. I know the way things are set up seems very
haphazard -- It was to me at first -- but it IS very logical once you
understand it.
