Ubuntu problem, X windows "Fatal Screen Error, No Screens Found". Please help!

Hello all. Having received an otherwise excellent laptop with Vista
installed, I attempted to install Ubuntu on a hard drive partition. It
worked, but the X screen won't start. I can only use the command line
prompt. I get an error at the login screen that says the X server
won't start. It also says "Fatal Screen error, no screens found".
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1520. I think one problem may be that I
have an older version of the xorg.conf file, which may not have the
correct drivers for my laptop. But I don't know.
Can someone help me please?
