Re: Embracing the Light

Good to see you've seen the light!
I wish I could use a linux workstation. Unfortunatly I have to run Autocad
and Strucad on my workstation so I still use WinXP for that.

I've been running 4 debian linux servers for 7 years or so now and I must
say the configurability, flexability and power of linux is far superiour to
that of microsoft products. Once you're over the learning curve you'll love
using linux and not having to worry about virus's and keyloggers and all the
nasties that MS Windows is succeptable to.

It was anger as the last straw was placed by Microsoft. I killed my
media center addition, and spit on its grave. Sure I lost data, not
being one for the backup, but on the whole my SUSE 10.3 install is
pleasing, and the challenge is half the fun isn't it? Working through
the problems, I find they lay in three categories.

1.Computability - Configuring devices is simply a pain. My TV card still
doesn't work, and I have little hope for my Rocket FM. Plus, finding
every little codec needed is tiresome.
2.Command line functions - If I want to install a package at command line
level, I am never successful. The terminal message screens spit back a
list of parameters I am not acquainted with leading to another level of
frustration. Software repositories work just fine, but I'd rather just
install a program from scratch.
3.Nonsense from vendors - Goggle Earth, which I use in my work, says
"lookie here kids, we have a Linux addition." It throws up a splash
screen and re-boots the computer. No, its not a Linux addition, its a
piece of crap.

In any case, its a sweet and sour thing right now. I guess I'll study
command line functions and just might get back here to ask a question or
two.
