Re: remote control linux server

I'd have to humbly disagree with not having X11 on your server. Unless
you need it to be really high performance, I'm sure you can spare the
cycles and other resources. From the sounds of it, you're new to
linux, in which case I think the graphics tools and interface can
definitely help you feel more comfortable.

A web interface is probably easier to use and uses a lot less ressources,
but it may be more work setting one up than connecting a monitor and mouse.

VNC is actually ideal for connecting to a Linux box, and most
distributions come with it, possibly even installed by default. It's
easy to set up with a ton of tutorials and information online.

NX is reportedly easier to set up, and compresses the data, thus is faster.
It is included on every Knoppix CD, but not part of every distribution.

VNC is included everywhere, and more widely used. You will need a VNC-client
for Windows though.

With ssh, you can also forward X11-connections (with no need for VNC or NX),
and encrypt and compress them. You won't get the whole desktop, only the GUI
of the apps you start from the shell, which might not be what you want if
you positively want a remote desktop. You also need an X-server on the
client machine though, which could be a problem if it is a Windows box.

I agree, though, that putty is a good idea: it will give you an SSH
secured terminal if all you need is the command line to the server
(which is probably a lot of the time, especially once you're more
comfortable on linux).

Definitely a must.
