Thanks for all the responses guys. There seems to be so many different
versions and name of linux here....what gives? Are they all different?

Yes, just like vehicles. If you are a mechanic they are pretty much
the same, wheels, engine, transmission. Just different parts needing
different tools and can do different things.

The one you want is the one which fits your needs the best and runs on your
hardware. If you have less than 256 meg memory you do not want
something like SUSE.

In a nutshell;
if you want something close to windows, get one with KDE as the
default desktop manager.

If you are real power user and want a web server and/or programmer tools
you pick something like Mandriva Linux. If someone wanting just
to surf the net and get email you pick something like ubuntu/kbuntu.

I do recommend narrowing down which linux you may want, then use
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search to see what kind of
help you can get in a news group supporting your selection.

I like lots of software packages and control over where and what I install.
I want a firewall installed since I like to play around with different
services (DNS, apache, ssh, vnc,...).
Want to see Mandriva install screen shots,
http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/installmdv2008.0.html

You can install both Gnome and KDE desktops. Firewall comes as part of
install.
