Re: Can you build your own desktop Client?

I'm not suggesting that any distro quit working on distros for other
hardware. I'm saying that by including the software on every install
iso creates a lotta bloat and creates problems for x86 single user
desktops. And that limits the user base.

I'm kinda surprised that some developer team hasnt noticed this. You'd
think the single user x86 desktop was enuf of a niche market to go
after. Even a version designed for only the USA market would be
significant, and simply installs for newbies. It aint like the net and
broadband aint available to find some other version.

Slackware, for one, offers a couple dozen kernels, but dont do the
logical thing, to let the user try to install a kernel first to see if
that works, rather than going ahead and installing all the other apps,
only to find out later that the kernel crashes on a particular
platform. And as the variety of CPUs increases, I expect we'll see
more of that.

With DRDOS and FREEDOS, you can logon and download a newer version,
replace the one you have been using, but if it dont work, go back to
try another or return to what you had, but in either case, all your
dos apps and personal data are still where they were on the drive.

Its fairly straightforward to build a dos platform from scratch,
adding the apps and drivers one at a time to see if it all works, and
when it dont, its more apt to be obvious as to why. I dunno why you
cant do that with Linux as well.
