I'm kinda surprised that some developer team hasnt noticed this. You'd
think the single user x86 desktop was enuf of a niche market to go
after. Even a version designed for only the USA market would be
significant, and simply installs for newbies. It aint like the net and
broadband aint available to find some other version.
Why double the work? If you get something to work for X+1 users, then it will also work for X users. The so called login managers do support passwordless logins and even auto login, configuring kdm or gdm, you would make it appear that you have a single user system, but with the security that a multi user environment will give you.
In most cases it's a quite straight forward installation method for Linux distributions, you have even less things to select than on a microsoft install, and it even can coexists with other operating system, while microsoft can't.
With DRDOS and FREEDOS, you can logon and download a newer version,
replace the one you have been using, but if it dont work, go back to
try another or return to what you had, but in either case, all your
dos apps and personal data are still where they were on the drive.
You can have mote than one Linux kernel installed, and you have access to all your data and apps, no matter which of the installed kernels you choose to boot with.
Its fairly straightforward to build a dos platform from scratch,
adding the apps and drivers one at a time to see if it all works, and
when it dont, its more apt to be obvious as to why. I dunno why you
cant do that with Linux as well.
Sure you can, but you need a base to work on, instead of having a big static kernel with built in shell and functions, it's a lot smarter to have a more dynamically system where you can upgrade one small file instead of a big one.
You can always keep on whining or make your own version (forking the kernel is legal) and build a monolithic system.
