Hi I am building a new pc to run linux and I have been recommended an asus board but it uses the ati cross fire gpu platform. I haven't really had alot of success with ati cards but since they open up their device drivers dwas wondering if they are better supported by the linux community. I'll be running a dual linux system, fedora8 and gentoo. Eventually phasing out fedora8 and making gentoo my linus os
I also have had better luck with the nVidia cards, but if you have a crossfire board, and if you want to get advantage of it, the it will be ATi with the binary drivers. At least in Gentoo it will be easy to install as it uses portage, while on Fedora and most other distributions you will have to relay on 3rd party packages or use the installer that can be downloaded from AMD.
The opensource driver is ok and it has hardware accelerated opengl, but it don't support all the graphics cards as the binary driver. It's still not so that the Linux community gets all the specs they need to develop a driver.
