individual, or to pity the people that are around to suffer the single

I'd vote for the latter, and say off with the ignorant individual's
head. Then again, I have a strict policy of zero tolerance when it
comes to stupid people---"stupid people" of course being defined as
those who refuse to cure their ignorance.
