Yes, I'm not convinced about search indexing either, though I've left

this off?

Also, Adobe Reader preloads itself by putting itself in the StartUp
folder, with the result that if you should happen to want to read a
PDF, it will come up more quickly than if it were not preloaded, but
if, as is perhaps more likely, you never load a PDF that session, the
reader modules have been sitting there consuming resources
unnecessarily for the entire duration. Frankly, I think it's a rather
cynical attempt to cover up the fact that Reader takes too long to
load, by making it appear as though it is Windows that takes too long
to load.

In general, the less you have in the System Tray, the faster Windows
will open your desktop and settle down. Many drivers, programs, etc,
clutter the system with unnecessary toolbars and gizmos that aren't
really necessary. Why should the graphics card driver load a hot-key
facility to change the resolution which the vast majority of users
will never use, or the printer driver load a status monitor when the
printer is not even switched on and connected at the moment, or your
netcard have a gizmo to test the network connection when 99% of the
time it will not be giving problems?

I have a folder called StartUpNot for such things.

I have the same setup on one of my machines. Vista calls the technology
'superfetch'. Superfetch tries to anticipate what executables and files
you might use and spends lots of time loading them in to and out of your
memory for you. It even records what days and times you use things and
'preloads' in advance to meet anticipated demand.

My experience is that it doesn't work very well and thrashes the hard
drive plenty, even with 3GB of memory.

I have NOTHING in my start up folder on Vista.
