Could be a permissions problem, eg. the user doesn't have permission to
access /dev/dvd, but it's hard to tell without output/error messages.

Please try transcode from the command line and post the output here. Reg.
your older question: Did you remember to install the DivX codec? I don't
know whether it's packaged with the binary rpm distribution you installed,
which I think is unlikely. I have just installed everything manually and
it works fine with DivX and Xvid.

You might want to try this test on the command line:

$ transcode -i /dev/dvd -x dvd -V -y divx4 -j 16,0 -B 5,0 -s 4.182 -w 1000 -o test.avi

(briefly: -i input -x importformat -y outputformat -j cut_border -B
resize_video -s increase_audio_level -w video_encoding_bitrate -o outputfile)
