Just before I read your message, I came to that conclusion myself.
Turns out that Hylafax was causing the spurious error message. The real
problem is in my X font somehow. I'm getting the following in my log:

could not init font path element

and then

Could not load default font fixed (or something like that). I have to
move these computers closer together so I don't forget what I'm doing
while walking between them. I'm googling those right now.
