    Hello folks,

Got a Dell Dimension 4500S with 1 gig of ram, 80 gigabytes of hard drive
    a DVD player, a Dell E772C monitor, 2 PCI slots and 6 original USB2
ports that I expanded using a 4 port USB2 hub making 9 USB2 ports total.
I disabled the onboard i8XX AC97 sound chip in the bios and opted to
use one of the two PCI slots for a CMI8738 sound card (cost me less than
$10 at Fry's but much nicer than the AC97). The other PCI slot is used
for a Dlink Ethernet card (8139too.o module) to connect to a broadband
cable modem. Since I put in such a big hard-drive, I opted to install
the entire 4+ gigs of Redhat 9 mostly for convenience later on. I
configured a linux-2.4.20-8custom kernel mostly to take full advantage
of my hardware (1.7 mhz Pentium 4 Celeron, USB2 serial ports, my HP 8200
USB CD Writer, blue tooth (bluez) support for my Palm Tungsten, and
custom kernel support for the CMI8738 sound card).

With the linux-2.4.20-8custom kernel, my system works very fast compared
to the vanilla linux-2.4.20-8 kernel. Also after recompiling pilot-link
and jpilot, my Palm Tungsten syncs using /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 no problems,
my HP 8200 USB CD Writer works fine with xcdroast, my Canon Powershot
A40 connects fine through USB with gtkam, my hp photosmart 7350 USB
printer works fine with cups and gimp print, and my CMI8738 sound card
works very nice using 4 speakers loud and clear and the /dev/sequencer
    plays midis no problems.

    Anyway, to Gnome 2.4

I used Garnome to install Gnome 2.4 (started it last night, and this
morning it got to Gnome 2.4 module epiphany almost at the tail-end of
the install with an error that mozilla 1.4, 1.5a, or 1.5b could not be
found - Redhat 9 comes with Mozilla 1.2.1). So I set my .xinitrc to
load Gnome 2.4 in the garnome directory, and Gnome 2.4 loaded fast, no
errors using $ startx. Everything works very nice thus far, and I am
pleased. I just downloaded the mozilla-1.4-0.src.rpm to rebuild and
install so I can finish with the epiphany compile and installation
(using Garnome) and proceed to finishing the Garnome installation.

Anyway Gnome 2.4 was loaded with a minor inconvenience (above) using
Redhat 9 on my system. Thought I share this information with you folks.
    Anyone else install Gnome 2.4?

    Best regards,

    Honorato Echavez
