    I guess I should point out that I had the same problem on the RedHat 9 machine I
    use at work, but if I installed Ximian Gnome or most recently Gnome 2.4, the
    problem would go away.

    Both of those use a different version of font config than a default RedHat install
    uses so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

    But I did try installing the latest font config RPM package for Gnome 2.4 and
    although there were no unmet dependencies, it made X unusable (that's why I did the
    fresh install on Saturday - groaaan).
