RH9 Riptide SC/Modem

Very New to Linux. Installed OK - sound card/modem not detected. I now
understand how and why these soft modems are not supported. I do have an
unused external robotics fax/modem - serial connexion. It seems this would
be OK with linux, but could I install it under linux and leave the original
card alone for windows use. Sorry for my ignorance.
Would be really very appreciative of any help or advice.
