i keep having xmms crash (close unexpectedly) on me..
i figure something probably got corrupted..
so i went to
http://www.xmms.org/download.php
and downloaded the rpm file for redhat 9

it looks like this on the window
=============
XMMS for Redhat 9.x:

     * XMMS 1.2.8: (http / ftp)
=================

then after i had the file downloaded i tried to install it with this command
  rpm -U xmms-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm
but the error i get is strange
====================

package xmms-1.2.7-8 (which is newer than xmms-1.2.8-1) is already installed
=============
here is a copy of my ls -all of both of the files (i still had the rpm
file from the previous install.)

[root@stc downloads]# ls -all xmms-1.2.7-8.i386.rpm
-rw------- 1 andrew andrew 1022515 Jul 19 19:02
xmms-1.2.7-8.i386.rpm
[root@stc downloads]# ls -all xmms-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm
-rw------- 1 andrew andrew 2016982 Oct 28 13:05
xmms-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm

.. and for one last piece of info
[root@stc downloads]# rpm -qa | grep xmms*
Binary file xmms-1.2.7-22.i386.rpm matches
Binary file xmms-1.2.7-8.i386.rpm matches
Binary file xmms-libs-1.2.7-8.i386.rpm matches
Binary file xmms-mp3-1.2.7-22.i386.rpm matches
Binary file xmms-output-OSS-1.2.7-8.i386.rpm matches
Binary file xmms-skins-1.2.7-22.i386.rpm matches

1st should i force the install/upgrade of the new xmms program.. (i
hesitate on forcing anything, at least until getting a second opinion)

2nd if forcing it is the wrong thing to do .. what would you recommend?
