After reading the constant bash-o-rama between Windoz and Linux and threw the constant crock of *** i have to go threw with
windoz myself i decided to get/install Redhat 9.

Here's the events to date.

Day 1: started install at 0800hrs. finished install at 1430 hrs.
(lot of work related delays but it stopped at least 20 times saying could not read file name. hit retry and off it goes with the file anyway.)

Got done. Re booted. Took a little bit longer than windows to load but all in all. No real difference there.

Comes up with a similar Windoz GUI type interface. took the next hour to poke around and get familiar with what was where.
Generally ran slower than molasses in alaska. So i went to start the updates.

Day 2: Began updates. (being a 56K dial-up) skip to day 5

Day 3 & 4: So far out in the boonies over here we're lucky we get a dial tone some days.

Day 5: 1200 hrs (ETA.) Finishing the last of the updates. Had to run a couple at a time since the jackasses at the ISP keep dropping me every 4-5 hours.

Overall speed has improved but still slower than windows on response time. Checking to see if the cache is working right.

To Be Continued.

**For everyone who has a phone. Plese read.**

Also. Speaking of phone lines. On Monday this week we had our local phone service line "slammed"

http://www.fcc.gov/slamming/

We use Vorizon for local and a company called QuantumLink for our long distance.
QuantumLink is somehow affiliated to a company called NOS Communications. http://www.fcc.gov/eb/News_Releases/nrnos.html or http://www.thedigest.com/more/151/151-020.html
Which somehow related to MCI worldcom.
Long and short we spent 3 + days with no phones. We got them back after 3 days. 4 calls to the FCC, a dozen calls to/from the PUC. 1 call to a senator (retired)
and an unknown number of calls to each companie where all they could say was it's not our fault. you have to talk to them.
Multiple state PUCs are after this companie for the things it has done to many other just liek us.

Moral of the story. If you have a phone. Call your main companie. ie. the ones drive the truck up to fix a phone line. (Vorizon. bell of ##, etc.)
Make sure your services are where you think it is. (chances are you got moved and don't know it already.)
Switch it back if needed.
Tell them to put a freeze on your phone services (both local and long distance.)
