Trying to get files off of a Linux disk

I am trying to copy some personal websites I had been hosting on my
RedHat Linux box onto a Windows machine. These are mostly .JPEG and
.HTML that mean a lot to me personally.

I've tried multiple approaches to do this, so this topic really
contains several different newbie questions. I really don't care how
I get this done, I just want to be able to get my files onto a Windows
XP machine.

Thinking it would help, I (perhaps foolishly) upgraded my machine from
RedHat 8 to RedHat 9. Since doing that, apparently, ftp server no
longer runs on my Linux box so that I can no longer ftp from a windows
machine onto my Linux box to get the files (a laborious method, but it
would work).

First newbie question:

1. How do I start ftp server on RedHat 9?

I installed a cd-rw drive in the Linux machine. RedHat 9 seems to
know the device is there (/dev/hdd) but I can't figure out how to
write files to a CD writer on Linux. There is some rather unstable
program called GnomeToaster that seems to want to copy from the DVD
drive to my CD drive, but how do I copy directories under
/var/www/html or any other files on my hard disk to a CD?

So, second newbie question:

2. How do I copy files from the harddrive to a CD under RedHat 9?

I tried setting up Samba, and actually briefly managed to, apparently,
get access from my windows machine to my linux machine, late at night,
but then it stopped working. It seemed to me that Samba was a
dead-end: so many security options, log-in account passwords blah blah
blah, etc.

So third question:

3. Is there any easy way to access files on a RedHat 9 system from a
Windows XP system on the same network? (In 25 words or less, please.
:-)

If need be, I could connect two machines together with a crossover
cable.

I tried installing a second hard drive in a machine with the Linux
Harddisk. I installed Windows XP on that drive, but even though XP
knows the second drive is there, it won't read from it.

I don't think I've tried the next step yet (which occurs to me as I
write this): can I copy files under RH9 to a second drive that is
either NTFS or FAT32 so that Windows XP can read it?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

regards,
Tom
