stuck with the update of gnome 2.2 to 2.4 ?

I'm struggling with the update of gnome and libs' dependencies :)

I'm playing with chain x needs x to be installed and so on.
The problem is :
fontconfig need freetype

so I download freetype, ./configure, make, make install -> ok
then I go in the fontconfig dir :
./configure -> ok
make trashes me :

I looked in the header file and saw that the msg is displayed if a macro
is not set but well, what can I do
