problem compiling kernel RH9

I wanted to upgrade the kernel on RH9 to kernel-2.6.1. every time I 'make
modules' then 'make modules_install' I get varying errors and the 'make
modules_install' will not continue? (sorry. fri night...no specifics)
Any ideas at all?
