I've got the same chipset NICs in my box, and they both work. Kudzu
found them, and set up the hardware appropriately, I just set up my own
networking parameters.

What steps did you go through?

Have you enabled the "activate device when computer starts" option? And
what happens if you try the following commands?

  /sbin/ifup eth0
  /sbin/ifup eth1

Is your BIOS set up for a non-plug and play, or plug and play mode?

On my system, lspci shows my NICs, including the deactivated one;
although the RTL-8139 chipset one is listed at an RTL-8029(AS) one.
