A Quandary - Newbie question

I recently installed RH 9 on my computer and I have run into a bit of a
dilemma. I have two accounts on my machine. Root and my name. When I login
under my name I have the desktop icons, and the icons for folders and such,
but when I log in under root all I get is icons that are sheets of paper.
This happened just after I ran the auto update and I have no idea how to
even approach fixing it. So some help would be appreciated.

Also I want to try messing around with the themes but when I select themes
in the preference menu I get a message that says it metacity isn't
installed or there is a problem with the gconf file. So how do I fix this.
