Hi group.. .not at all sure where this should be posted really so
cross-posting HA to Linux for this one... apologies if it offends.
I have a (redhat 9) server running web services etc. (which will also be
targeted for MisterHouse once I get started in the HA field).
It has no sound-card (but one could be fitted should it become a necessity)
I would like a way of it to be either playing (soundcard needed) or
streaming audio - with the lowest load possible (its a PII450 with 256MB
running web, ftp, ssh, samba services already - with MisterHouse to follow).
Ideally 128K quality as it sounds good.
I am looking for recommendations on how to achieve this. Do I use xmms or
similar to playback MP3s and take the audio out from the server to the
amplifier (I have run audio across the home cat5 (3.5mm jack to rj45 one
end; rj45 to 2x phono sockets the other running to amplified speakers) and
it works with no problems) or do I get it to stream it and have some other
software on another PC in the living room receiving and decoding the stream?
I have found http://gjukebox.sourceforge.net/ and
http://www.opennet.ru/docs/HOWTO/MP3-Box-HOWTO-3.html but wonder if either
of these is rightj for me.
Some kind of web based control would be key as the playback can then be
controlled from another PC in the home.
Any tips / suggestions please?!
Many thanks
Richard
