new RH9 install hangs at X - setup as vesa

    Anaconda didn't find my nvidia 5200, so I accepted the default on
    installation. Now the system hangs when booting to X. Everything seems
    to load ok up till then.

    After the screen goes black, I've tried ctl+alt+Backspace and the
    system is unimpressed. Need to do a hw-reboot.

    Complicating matters is that I'm a newbie, can't figure out how to
    tell LILO to boot me to text mode so I can poke around, and can barely
    maneuver in Emacs.

    This is the second attempt at installation. First time I used Grub,
    and was able to ctl-a, boot "linux single" and get to a prompt. After
    that, I searched in vain for Xconfigurator, XF86Setup or anything else
    that could give me some sort of menued setup.

    So, I'm asking for some help to:

    1. Get LILO to let me in text-only
    2. Inspect my X configuration and try to boot a "failsafe" type X
    3. Get some instructions on getting the proper nvidia drivers and
    installing them from the command line, if all else fails.

    Actually, if all else fails I'll just wipe redhat and install it into
    vmware again, since my main purpose is to learn linux - but that's
    ridiculously slow.

    Oh, and are there any easier editors than Emacs installed by default?
