Cannot Install Red Hat 9

I am trying to install Red Hat Linux 9 Professional Workstation
without success so far.
First tried install on a Shuttle SB61G2 (Pentium Pro shuttle computer
box). Installation froze before anything could be installed. I had
the technicians at Fry's, where I bought the box, try an install
- same result.
Next, tried install on a Dell Inspiron 7000, a vintage 1999 laptop.
Installation froze while reading installation packages.
Red Hat has a hardware compatability web page
(http://www.redhat.com/software/rhl9_hcl.html), but it only lists
components, not systems. For example, Intel has moved on from the
i845 to the i865 chip set, and current motherboards naturally use the
i865, but Red Hat does not list the i865 as compatible (only the
i845). The Shuttle SB61G2 has an i865. I don't presume that was
the compatibility problem, I just know installation failed.
Not incidentally, SUSE Linux installed on the Shuttle SB61G2 without
I'd like to install Red Hat 9 on a small computer, preferably a
shuttle. Can anyone please tell an inexpensive computer configuration
that actually works for an installation of Red Hat 9. Thank you.
