On a computer such as yours, try ArkLinux. It is ligther and will work
better than Red Hat 9, which has been discontinued anyway.
You could also try MDK 10 Official, which is about to come out or Fedora
with XFCE as your desktop. A lighter desktop environment will make your
life easier. That computer of yours will work great as a server,
particularly on a distribution such as sme-server.
If you really want to enjoy Linux, you can get a faster computer on ebay for
$50 or even buy a new one for less than $200 at Wall-Mart and other online
retailers.
