Yes, the installation book says you can do this. But, think about it, its
a very awkward way to install. First add up the extra time to do an
install of an earlier version and the extra time it needs to format the
extra space. Then add up the time to copy all the files. Then, here is
another kicker: for the install I did manage to be successful with, it
required three changes (four disks) of CDROM disks (and there is no
directions in the install manual for how to do this), and then, you get
to try the boot floppy again, and hope/pray it works.
As I said in a prior post: When the box says "minimum requirements" its
not like in the old days when that meant that if you had those
requirements, then you made a home run. Today, "minimum requirements"
means you have to have more than what those requirements say and the
hardware compatibility specs on the RH website are not enough. And,
still, there are all the errors and vaguenesses and shortcomings in the
installation manual. Believe me, I read prior books and install manuals
from Red Hat and they were much much better. Besides, for 5.2 and 6.2,
every box I tried an install on, I was, 100% successful. So, in the
"hard-disk partition to another partition on the hard-disk" install
method, you have to have a prior version of RH linux (or at least one
that will install onto an Ext3 or 2 partition (at one point in the
install manual it says it will copy from a FAT partition, and another
part of the same manual it says Ext2 or 3, another inconsistency). So, in
today's day and age, you have to look on eBay (maybe) to get an earlier
version.
Again, I am not anti-Linux. I am Pro-linux. But the momentum towards
bloatware, complexity, and install manual mediocrity is disappointing.
