Open a terminal(command line)
Make sure you have the compiler & development files installed.
tar -xvzf file.tar.gz
cd file
./configure
make
make install

Imho. Just go to www.freshrpms.net, and install the mplayer rpms
Much easier, and mplayer is all you need for playing videos.
(well, perhaps xine or ogle if you'll watch dvds.)
