I would just boot the computer with Knoppix as someone else mentioned. That
way you can get your data off. You can use Knoppix to connect to either
another server on your network or put in two hard drives in the system and
copy the data you need over to the secondary drive. That way you could wipe
the original drive and reinstall Linux.
