That's a broad question :)
but seeing as you're posting from Pan, you've obviously conquered a few
hurdles...
are there any programs in particular that you'd like to install? Most RH
stuff comes in .rpm format and can be easily installed by double clicking
on the downloaded icon, unless of course the said program has other
dependencies...
To save aggrevation, I'd recommend having a look at the software packages
apt-get and synaptic--gui tools that can be a great help in managing those
rpm packages.
Now do you want to compile stuff from source? That's a whole new ball game...
