FC1 - Evolution Pauses While Building Vfolders

Some Background:

I'm currently running a very stock i386 version of Fedora Core 1 on a AMD
Athlon64 system (3200+ processor, 1 gig of ram, w/2 gigs of swap space on
a 120 gig [single partition] ATA133 harddrive). This machine is used at
work. Due to the large amount of email received/sent each day to clients,
I use an elaborate email (non-Vfolder) layout containing a separate folder
for each client account I deal with, and include about a dozen other
required folders for email sorting usage. This would currently comprise of
about 125+ folders & at least double that in email rules. This
email layout/structure will continue to grow steadily (about a dozen added
each day) as I work with additional clients.

The Issue:

My issue is with opening Evolution each session & how it opens the email
files to build the Vfolders list. Due to the number of folders, it gets
about 70% complete & the entire system freezes for about 5-6 seconds, then
continues to load the rest of the files & works through out the session
without issue. The load on the CPU reports to be at 90%+ during this
loading activity & swap shows no activity. I suspect this
application/system behavior is expected due to the large amount of files
and data it is required to open/read.

Even though things are not broken & working well in every way expect for
this issue, I would like to know if there is anything that can be done to
remove or reduce this delaying/pausing effect. I would like to address
the issue now while the delay is still fairly short, and before this
system really becomes bogged down with a few hundred more folders &
several hundred more rules.

My Questions:

1 - Being an old DOS person, I was figuring an adjustment similar in
effect to the files, stacks & buffer settings in the old DOS config.sys
files would need to be made. How/where would I look for these types of
settings and what would be optimal for my situation?

2 - I'm also looking to upgrade to Fedora Core 2 (i386 version) will doing
this alleviate this issue? If not, will it make it worse?

3 - Is there anything else recommend I try or look at?

Thanks,

James T.
