Thanks very much Tim for your patient reply which I have just seen.
Please forgive not replying in line as this will be short.
I *did* find the `fedorafaq` in Google. Could not have been looking hard
    enough before :-))
Then I followed the instructions, starting with `Download this yum conf`. I
tried to copy and paste this into `/etc/yum.conf` but only about a third of
the text was being copied. Eventually I said `to hell with it` and tried to
save it anyway, only to get the message `You do not have permission`. That
was the final straw and I've done nothing since until right now when I
started reading `aolr` and saw your reply.
I'll try Mark Nagy's fedorafaq (looks very good) again at some stage, and
    also your instructions `# rpm -e kdeaddons`.
Maybe I should get a book. Just seen the post suggesting `Red Hat Linux &
    Fedora Unleashed`.
Again, thanks very much indeed for your time, patience and not retaliating
    to my stupid statement :-))

(My nick is undergoing a transition. I've used `handyman` for quite a while
(because that is my job) but it doesn't seem appropriate for someone who
doesn't know an OS. Handymen are meant to know everything aren't they? :-))
