Hi Paul!
Yep, that's the sort of repy I really appreciate. Lots of helpfull
inforamtion, and I got my data back with your tips....
At first: I have administerd a site with over a dozend servers and over
thousand users, integrated in a directory structure with hundrets of
servers and about 36000 people worldwide. So I know what datasecurity is
and I could tell that I never lost any byte of information the whole time.
Second, I know filesystems very well as I changed business a time ago
and am now developing for mobile CD and DVD applications. You can't know
any filesystem and you cannot save any computer and electronics related
information in one brain. You will have to specialize and that mens that
you have to learn some things while keeping just the basics of other
things or even forget them.
So, I have some data lost, and its just a home server, allowing me to
access my music and emails overs the week while I am away from friends
and family. I will have a lot of work to resample all my discs so, there
is no data really lost, but the comfort of listing via internet from the
hotel is over for now. And, as you read this, you understand that there
is really less time to learn a filesystem and debug it for getting some
files back.
And about the backup strategy, there is a real problem. There where
400GB of data to backup. Where? on a second set of drives for another
400EUR, or a array of 2 or three DLTs for about 2000€ each without the
cost of tapes?
Hey, I have a RAID 5 running for data security, but that cost enough to
get my hobby-pockets empty for the next few month.
So now it up to you
Best regards,
Ulrich
