yum and fedora

Hello,

General yum question: How much trouble are people having using yum (one
of its counterparts) to keep their system up to date? Any other
suggestions?

I am especially concerned with Fedora's decision to remove mp3
compatability from the software they distribute. Are they doing this in
other domains as well?
