For the man problem it is important to know that man uses 'more' or in
the case of linux 'less'. 'less' has a specific option that keeps
it from reseting the terminal upon exit. I think something like
export LESS=-X
will have the desired effect without relying on X11.
I haven't responded directly to the OP because his post hasn't shown
up on this newserver yet.
