Sendmail on Fedora

I installed Fedora and afterwards found port 110 (pop3) and 25 (smtp) to be
both running. So I went and stopped sendmail. Now, will this prevent me
from sending mail from php scripts within the machine? I seem to recall
having to run sendmail in a previous redhat version.
